Approved Prenatal Medications

Listed are medications you can take safely for the minor discomforts of pregnancy in general. It is best to avoid any medications during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. if you are taking aprescription, we should be notified as soon as you can.

The following are over-the-counter medicines that are OK to take during pregnancy.

Pain Medication:
Tylenol (acetaminophen) for minor aches pains, headaches
Codeine (by prescription only)
*DO NOT USE: Aspirin, Motrin, Advil, Aleve

Cough/Colds:
Robitussin (cough)
Robitussin DM (nonproductive cough)
Tylenol Cold

Antihistamines:
Zyrtec, Claritin, Benedryl, Dimetapp

Insomia:
Benedryl

Hemorrhoids:
Preparation H

Diarrhea:
Imodium (1 dose-if it persists, notify office)
Follow the B.R.A.T. (banana, rice, applesauce, toast)

Heartburn, Indigestion
Tums
Rolaids
Gas-X
Mylanta (safe for first 12 weeks)
Tagamet
Zantac Acid
*DO NOT USE: Pepto-Bismol (contains aspirin)

Decongestants:
Sudafed (pseudoephedrine)
Robitussin CF
Tavist D
Ocean Mist Nasal Spray (Saline)

Nausea:
Small frequent meals
Ginger Ale
Vitamin B6
Sweet fruit syrup from caned pears/peaches

Yeast Infections:
Monistat

Toothache:
Orajel
May see dentist, may have Novacaine, may have dental x-rays with shield.

Sweeteners:
NutraSweet
*DO NOT USE: Sweet n Low

Constipation:
Colace
Fiber All
Metamucil
Fibercon
Milk of Magnesia
Citrucel

Lice Treatment:
RID (only)
*DO NOT USE: Kwell
